Athens Revisited

Taken at a small church on a hill in central Athens. She was sitting outside selling religious iconography to tourists. She was content soaking up the sun and I imagine she had worn the chair she was sitting in thin.

Dirtbilly Rock

Before we get into a few bands I've seen recently let's break down my new favorite music category Dirtbilly rock. This takes me back to my days in Springfield listening to Big Smith, being close to Arkansas and the smell of warm Cooks beer. Dirtbilly rock at it's finest is Hillstomp, the Portland duo of Hurricane Henry and Lord Johnny Buckets. Think The Black Keys but more punk, think The White Stripes with less Meg, think two guys raising hell on stage playing the banjo and a kitty litter bucket that may or may not have grown up in a trailer park near you. They were just one of the bands we saw at Redhook Sausage Fest (Redhook if you are reading this get your shit together next year and have more than one beer stand and some vendors selling sausage not shi shi finger foods for elitest foodies from Bellevue- No Offense Dante Inferno guy you pulled your weight and fed the masses)

More pics and some links to the other bands after the jump. If you don't jump though at least check out Hillstomp because they will make you jump and may cause an insatiable urge to wear overalls and hunt alligators.

Hey Marseilles closed the day out and put on another excellent show. The first time I saw these guys was at the Tractor earlier this year. They have a well rounded sound with several "classic" instruments layering in over great vocals. As a double bonus they have a vinyl album available that comes with digital download. (If you are a label, band or manager and reading this make a note this is genius marketing)

Last but not least I give you Sallie Ford and The Sound Outside. This was my first time hearing Sallie and crew and they were great. They drew the short lot opening at noon but none the less a crowd favorite or at least my crowd's favorite. A little bit a luck and an invite from some amazing friends and I'll hope to see Sallie next year in the dirty South.
